Social dance etiquette

How to be a great partner

A few simple habits keep the floor fun and safe for everyone.

Ask, and accept a no

Anyone can ask anyone to dance. It's always okay to say "no, thank you," and it's always okay to hear it.

Skip the unsolicited advice

Our Code of Conduct asks dancers not to give unsolicited advice, in class or on the social floor. Save the teaching for the teachers.

Watch your floorcraft

Be aware of your partner and the dancers around you to avoid collisions. Save aerials for when they're invited.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Do I need a partner?

Nope. Plenty of people come on their own. In most swing classes, partners rotate every few minutes, so you'll meet lots of people, and asking someone to dance is normal at a social.

Do I need any experience?

None at all. The beginner class at 8:00 PM is made for people who have never danced before, and it's included with your dance admission.

Which class should I take?

If you're brand new, start with the 8:00 PM beginner class. Once you have the basics, the 7:00 PM Lindy Hop Fundamentals class helps you build a strong foundation. If you love fast music and close embrace, try the 7:00 PM Balboa class.

How much does it cost?

The 7:00 PM Lindy Hop Fundamentals and Balboa classes are $10 each. The 8:00 PM beginner class is included with dance admission. Tickets are sold at the door. See prices for details.

Is there a student discount?

At our launch party, students got 50% off dance admission with a student ID. Ask at the door about current discounts.

What kind of music will I hear?

Swing-era jazz: big band, small-group hot jazz, and everything in between. Most Fridays are DJ'd, and special nights feature live bands.

What if I just want to watch?

Watching the floor is half the fun, and it's a great way to get a feel for the dance. We bet you'll want to jump in before the night is over.

Is The HOP ever cancelled?

Occasionally, for venue events or community weekends. The Turnverein has also been under restoration after an August 2026 fire. Always check the calendar or Instagram before you head out.
